We always pair turkey burger night with our favorite air-fried homemade french fries!

If you’ve read our previous recipe blogs, you know we’ve been trying to maintain a healthier lifestyle. One of the ways we decided to get healthier was to cut back on the amount of red meat in our diets. We knew we weren’t cut out to be 100% vegetarian (and we love cheese too much to go vegan), but we knew that we could definitely cut back most of the way and eat chicken, turkey, and fish instead. When we first started our cut back, we had weird cravings for burgers! Those frozen turkey burgers just weren’t cutting it, they always were dry little hockey pucks. So I set to experimenting with making my own fresh ones. I tried to make them just like regular burgers, and they still dried out so I experimented with adding some extra moisture into them with some milk and stuffing them with a little butter and they turned out amazing!

Now these satisfy our weekly burger craving perfectly! For a perfect pairing, if you have an air fryer try my super easy air-fried french fries!

Check out our tips for making the perfect healthier turkey burgers!

  1. If you’re a self-professed carnivore, you might think I’m pulling your leg about the red meat thing, but I assure you I’m 100% not. Contrary to a current study that went viral over social media, scientific studies have shown that high intake of red meat and processed meats are linked with cancer and heart disease. Check out this article from the Harvard Medical School debunking that “study” that claimed there was no correlation with red and processed meat and read up on some of their other articles on the subject here. Now none of this is saying you should hardcore boycott beef, but multiple studies show that especially if you’re a woman or high risk for heart conditions, you should definitely make sure you’re portion controlling to no more than 3 oz at a time and about one serving a week. These studies also also include bacon, which you’ll see as a recommended topping. We super reduced our amount of processed meats like bacon, but it’s super delicious so sometimes we like to cheat and have the suggested portion of 2 slices.

  2. While I would’t say eat these every night, they’re super versatile and you can make them to fit any flavor just like your standard burger. Try out different combinations every time to add some variety. One week we’ll do a classic American style with American cheese and bacon with a Sriracha Garlic Aioli twist, the next we’ll do it Farm style with cheddar, bacon, and a fried egg, and the next we'll go Swiss style with Swiss cheese and caramelized onions. You could even sub the poultry seasoning for Greek seasoning and stuff them with feta cheese or sub the poultry seasoning for some taco seasoning and top with caramelized onions and jalapeños.

  3. Here’s our super simple recipe for some super delicious Air-Fried French Fries to pair with your burgers:

    • 3-4 Russet potatoes that have been cleaned and cut into 1/4-1/2 inch sticks (don’t peel your potatoes, most of the nutrients in potatoes like fiber and potassium are in the peels)

    • 1 tablespoon olive or avocado oil

    Seasoned salt and pepper

    • 1 tablespoon salt

    • 1 teaspoon baking soda

    • 3 cups cold water

Soak your cut up potatoes in the mixture of water, baking soda, and salt for 30 minutes. While pre-heating your air fryer to 380°F, mix up the potatoes, oil, and seasonings in a bowl. Throw your uncooked fries into the air fryer and cook at 380° for 18 minutes. After the time is up make sure you toss the fries thoroughly and expose any sides that might not be crisping up. Put them back in at 380° for another 8 minutes or so until they are all nicely browned/crisped. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce!

  4. The homemade Sriracha Garlic Aioli on the recipe card is great for multiple different meals and is great on those fries! Use it on some salmon cakes or on some grilled corn!
